DJs vs Live Bands at Your Wedding

Most people consider weddings as just one of the things you get to do once in your lifetime. This explains why a lot of first time brides put in a lot of work to make it remarkably memorable. And making a wedding a real milestone is based on the amount of time you spend planning for it. More than fifty percent of the time you spend on a wedding is attending the reception party. You have to remember that a wedding reception party is made extra-ordinary by the entertainment you will provide your guests.

This leads us to answer the all-important question of choosing between a DJ or a wedding band. One way of making note-worthy memories of an event is great entertainment, and deciding who will provide the music for your wedding can make or break your party. Let me clue you in on some things that you need to consider when deciding between hiring a DJ or a wedding band to your wedding.

All wedding and event planners will agree with me in saying that the grandeur of your wedding will depend on how much money you are willing to spend. It goes without saying that if you want to travel first class, you will have to pay extra for a business class plane ticket. Would you have gone the cheaper route when purchasing the engagement ring? Or would you go the extra mile to get what your bride would really love?  It is the same with planning for your wedding, decide on a budget first so you will know what type of entertainment your budget can afford. Since a wedding band consists of more than one person, as opposed to a solo DJ, a wedding band will cost more than having somebody spin recorded music and at the same time host the event.

But paying extra for a wedding band certainly has its perks and advantages. With a wedding band, your guests get to enjoy live music, they can even request for old classics that are not available anymore. You can instantly request for an immediate change on the play list, making the music more flexible and to tailor-fit to suit your guests’ requests. Live music is definitely a stronger invitation to the dance floor.

It is different when band members also dance with the tune they are playing. With both DJ and wedding band, you can choose a specific genre of songs you want to play on your wedding. Just inform the DJ or the band to play new age music all night long and they will. Take note that a wedding band usually comes with a cost range of $2,000 to $20,000. That is a big margin if you will consider getting a DJ at $100 to $300 on an hourly basis.

You will also have to consider the type of music that the majority of your guests will enjoy, not to mention the type of music that you enjoy as a couple. You will be able to ask any DJ to just be ready with up to 10 songs from all imaginable genres but with a wedding band, expect that each has a signature sound and specialty music, which is most likely to be played most parts of the night. Imagine hiring a Beatles-like wedding band and asking them to play a Madonna song. I don’t think so.

Again, successful events are a product of reasonable planning and timely preparation. I would rather spend more hours planning my wedding than spending hours shedding tears of regret after realizing that you got the wrong entertainment for your guests. Take note that your wedding day is something that you will happily tell your children about, so make the memories last with details that everyone would like to remember.
