Eyeball Jewelry

The most recent form of body enhancement, developed in 2002, is eyeball jewelry, or its more proper name, the extraocular implant.

This controversial procedure, in which a small piece of decorative stone is embedded in the conjunctiva, was developed in Scandinavia (the only country where the procedure is legal) at the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery. At the price of 750 Eurodollars, it is marketed as, "JewelEye".

Performed in a clinical environment, the procedure is done with both eyes immobilized by anesthetic drops, and layers of the eye are separated by liquid injection. Before you undergo the surgery, there will be an eye exam to make sure that there are no defects on the eye. This is also the perfect time to discuss with the ophthalmologist the design and the positioning of the jewelry that you want to implant. The jewelry can be placed anywhere in the entire white area of the eye.

While the long-term effects of the surgery are unknown, the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery claims that there are no adverse effects afterward and patient satisfaction is reported to be high.  The healing process is just the same as any normal surgery and it just involves antibiotic drops.

To date, Hippocratech b.v. of Rotterdam is the only company that supplies the platinum alloy product. The jewelry is 1/8” wide and comes in shapes including a Euro sign, music note, clover and star.
