The Best Movies About Treasure Hunts

If I had to pick a favorite genre of movie I would choose action adventure, without a doubt. Specifically, I love movies about treasure hunts! “National Treasure” with Nicholas Cage was on just the other day, and although I only caught bits and pieces of it, it reeled me in just as it did the first time I saw it. The funny thing is I never expected to love it; I just did. “National Treasure” happens to be one of the few movies that I can watch over and over again; and I am not one to re-watch movies. I get bored, already knowing the plot and the ending. But something about the adventure in a treasure movie – the fast action, swooping plots, and of course the treasure – keeps me entertained on subsequent viewings. And the treasure part of ”National Treasure” does not disappoint; not in the least! When Ben, Cage’s character, lights the torches in the treasure room and the magnitude of the treasure itself becomes apparent, the sight is breathtaking. The light just keeps going further and further back into the cavern, illuminating a treasure filled with gems and jewelry both amazing and unbelievable at the same time. Which I guess is the point.

Another family favorite is “The Goonies”. This was a movie that my brothers and I watched over and over again in our childhood and I picked the DVD up for my daughter a few years ago, hoping she would love it. I admit that I breathed a sigh of relief when she did; she is my daughter! “The Goonies” is great because it’s a group of kids that are the treasure hunters, proving that it doesn’t take a team of highly educated, government employees to hunt and find a vast, hidden treasure. It doesn’t hurt that the treasure allows the kids to save their family homes from the bad guys.

Some treasure hunting movies are so popular that they become trilogies; or rather, they are designed to be trilogies. Some of the most popular action adventure series are the “Indiana Jones” movies with the debonair Harrison Ford playing the lead role as the whip cracking treasure seeker and “Pirates of the Caribbean” with Johnny Depp as the swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow.

Other notable treasure seeking movies include the movie based on Dan Brown’s riveting novel “The DaVinci Code,” an action packed, historical movie about the search for the Holy Grail, while attempting to re-write the history of Christianity. Finally, no discussion on this topic would be complete without mentioning “Treasure Island,” the 1950 film version of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s epic novel.
